ATHENS:
Europe’s historic capital and the modern day capital of Greece. Inhabited for at least 7000 years, many conquerors occupied the city and therefore built many historic monuments.
Acropolis: Meaning, the highest point, is one of the main attractions in Athens, Acropolis an ancient fortification on top of a hill.It overlooks the old theatre of Dionysus, which could hold upto 17,000 people. The sacred buildings on top of the Acropolis include the Parthenon, Erechtheion, Propylaia and the temple of Athena Nike. All these buildings date back to 5BC.
National Archaeology Museum:
Founded in the 19th century it is the largest museum in Greece and is notably one of the largest antiques museum in the world, offering a view of the Greek civilization. It has has relics from the prehistoric era.
Byzantine Museum:
This museum offers insights from the Byzantine era. It has more than 25000 artefacts on display.
Agora:
Agora, was the everyday marketplace of ancient Athens. The word ‘Agora’ in greek means to ‘gather’. It is said that this place could have been the trial place for Socrates in 399 BC.
Temple of Hephaestus:
This 5th century BC Doric temple This temple was then converted to a church, which saved it from its destruction.
Church of the Holy Apostles:
Amidst the ruins of the Agora, this structure was the only building standing. This structure’s architecture is a mix of Ashlar and Arabic sculptures.
Olympieion: Temple of Olympian Zeus:
Zeus, is considered the most powerful of all Gods and also referred to as the ‘God of Gods’. More than a hundred enormous columns once supported this temple, of which only 15 remain.
Panathenaic stadium and Olympic Stadium
Ancient Athens’ largest building, this stadium has a capacity for 60,000 spectators. Constructed around 335 BC, it was the venue and would host the Panathenaic games.
Syntagma Square:
The most fascinating is the changing of guards event. For many tourists it is the most exciting and memorable event. The soldiers of the presidential guard stand in front of the Hellenic parliament 24 hours. These guards wear traditional costumes with pleated skirts, leg tassels and pom pom shoes. The changing of the guard takes place in front of the ‘unknown soldier’ monument at 11am daily.
Cape Sounion and Temple of Poseidon:
In a half day trip, especially known for its sunset views. On the clifftop facing the sea, It has the remains of the Temple of Poseidon.
